What a Queensland Plumbing Licence Covers

In Queensland, a person needs an occupational licence to do plumbing and drainage work, and a business taking the work on also needs a contractor licence. The QBCC issues both.

The occupational licence shows the holder has the skills for the work. The contractor licence shows the business behind the job has the financial capacity and training to run jobs properly.

Three classes sit inside that system:

  1. Plumber

covers plumbing work above ground, apart from anything needing its own endorsement.

  2. Drainer

covers drainage work below ground level, again outside endorsed work.

  3. Gas work

sits on its own licence, held by a licensed gasfitter who may install, alter, repair, service, test or certify a gas system and its pipework.

Regulated work falls into permit work, notifiable work and minor work, and all three categories must be done by a licensed plumber or drainer.

How Plumbing Work Is Regulated in Queensland

Two bodies share the checking: the QBCC licenses plumbers, keeps the notifiable work register and investigates unlicensed work, while Brisbane City Council assesses applications, issues permits and inspects. You can search the QBCC's online registers to confirm a licence, and an address search shows whether a Form 4 has been lodged for a property.

The paperwork you receive depends on the job:

  1. Form 4

after notifiable work, you or the person who engaged us get a copy. The QBCC can supply one if it never arrives.

  2. Gas system compliance certificate

after gas work on a new install or alteration, the gasfitter gives it to you straight away.

You can also ask the council to inspect notifiable work at any stage.

Questions About Our Licences and Coverage

Does gas work in a Teneriffe home need a separate licence?

Yes, gas work sits on its own licence in Queensland, and a licensed gasfitter is the only person who may carry it out. You can ask to sight the gas work licence before the job starts. Our gas fitters hold it, and you receive the compliance certificate on the day.

Who inspects plumbing work in a Teneriffe home?

Brisbane City Council issues permits for new work and can inspect notifiable work at any stage if you ask. The QBCC handles licensing and the register of notifiable jobs. Urban Utilities owns the street mains and sewer, and the pipes on your side of the meter belong to you.

What does QBCC licensed mean for my Teneriffe plumbing job?

The QBCC issues both licence layers: an occupational licence for the plumber on the tools and a contractor licence for the business running the job. Our licence number is QBCC No: 15024607, and every job is done by a licensed plumber.
