Plumbing trouble right now? Three quick checks:

  • Water you can't stop: turn off the valve at your water meter first, then call (07) 3524 0766.
  • Gas you can smell inside: switch the appliance off, open up doors and windows, and leave light switches and power points as they are. Smell still there? Turn off the gas supply and ring (07) 3524 0766, or 000 if it won't clear.
  • A drip or a cistern that won't stop filling: this is a booked job, not an emergency. Ring (07) 3524 0766 to set a time.

There's no extra fee for nights, weekends or public holidays, and we're available 24/7.

Gas Smells, Burst Pipes and Overflowing Toilets

Four faults cannot wait: gas you can smell, a burst pipe, a failed supply of water or gas, and a blocked or broken toilet. Each one either risks the building or takes out something you cannot live without. A soggy patch around the meter box usually means the fault is upstream, on the water utility's side, so report that one straight to them.

Renters carry one extra rule: Queensland tenancy law lists the emergency repairs, and anything outside that list waits as routine work.

Night, Weekend and Public Holiday Calls

A contained fault can hold for a scheduled visit; gas you can smell, sewage through a floor drain or water that will not shut off cannot, at any hour. That is the whole test.

The test never changes with the clock. A tap dripping into the basin at 11pm is still daytime work, and a rental follows the tenancy law's emergency list either way.

Stop the Water and Gas Before You Call

Start with the isolation valve at the fixture, or the meter stop tap when no smaller tap works; for gas, shut the supply at the meter or cylinder. The isolation valve closes off one fixture alone and leaves the rest of the home with water.

The water meter hides in a low box level with the ground, in the strip beside the road before your front boundary. The stop tap inside shuts when you turn the handle clockwise.

Before you close the meter tap, check that cutting the water will not harm an appliance like your hot water unit. On the gas side, switch the gas appliance off and let fresh air through before going near the meter. If the smell persists once the gas is off, call 000.

Emergency Repairs That Need a Licensed Plumber

A licensed gasfitter handles all gas work, and our QBCC licensee deals with a split pipe or a blocked sanitary drain. Both jobs fall under Queensland's minor work category, which needs no permit and no Form 4, so nothing official delays the repair. The owner closes the valves and contains the mess; the licensee does the fixing.

A Form 4 is the notice a plumber lodges with the QBCC after finishing notifiable work, and minor work skips it. Gas faults go to our gas leak repairs page once the supply is safely off.

What Fails in the Woolstores

Apartments dominate Teneriffe: at the last census, 88.4 per cent of dwellings were flats or apartments, many inside converted woolstores. Most emergencies here start above a neighbour's ceiling.

A burst flexi hose inside one of the stores soaks timber floors and drips through into the unit below, so isolating your unit supply comes first. Our burst pipe repairs page covers the repair, and leak detection finds the hidden ones.

Renters make up plenty of our calls. At the last census, 17.8 per cent of dwellings were owned outright and 28.5 per cent had a mortgage, so tenancy law settles urgency for many.

Emergency Plumbing Questions From Teneriffe

Call (07) 3524 0766

Should I call a plumber now or wait until morning?

Isolate the fault, then judge the wait. A dripping mixer or a slow-draining basin is fine left to a morning booking. Gas, sewage backing up in the laundry or unstoppable water needs the phone straight away, day or night.

Where do I shut off the gas in an emergency?

Shut the gas off at the meter, or at the bottle if you run LPG and the bottle is safe to reach. Turn the appliance off and air the place out first. If the smell continues after the supply is shut off, call 000; the supplier's emergency number is printed on your gas bill, top right.

Can I fix a burst pipe myself in an emergency?

No, you cannot. Mending a broken pipe is minor work only a QBCC licensee may carry out. Close the valves and mop up what you can, and leave the pipe itself to the licensed repair.

What decides the cost of an emergency repair in Teneriffe?

What failed, and how hard the pipe or fitting is to reach, set most of the price. The fixed quote before work starts settles the figure, so nothing surprises you on the night.

Who can repair a gas leak in Teneriffe?

A licensed gasfitter, and nobody else. Queensland's gas rules cover repairs, servicing, testing and certification as gas work. Shut the supply off first, then call us and we will send a licensed gasfitter out.
