Most of the loos we fix here sit inside converted apartments, and their cisterns hold standard parts rather than anything exotic. Below is what fails, where leaks show, who may do the work, and how the price gets set.

The Three Parts That Usually Fail
Three parts cause nearly all toilet trouble: the inlet valve, outlet valve and the seals, and each one fails in its own way.
Inlet valve
it refills the cistern after each flush and shuts off when the float rises to its set level. Worn or blocked, it fills at a crawl or never stops filling.
Outlet valve
it keeps the flush water sitting in the cistern until you press the button. Once its washer wears, water slips into the pan, the cistern tops itself up on repeat, and the toilet seems to run.
Seals
the rubbers joining pan, cistern and drain perish or move over the years, letting smells into the room or water onto the floor.
Two other symptoms trace back to the same parts. A flush that barely moves the water points to jet holes under the rim furred with scale, a cistern level set too low, or a button that sticks halfway.
A cistern that will not fill is usually a worn inlet valve, a float riding too low, or a supply tap that was never opened fully after some earlier plumbing. If yours is the running kind of trouble, our running toilet guide walks through the diagnosis step by step.

Leaks at the Base, Cistern and Supply Line
Where the water shows tells you which part has gone.
Floor around the base
the pan connector seal is the usual suspect, and when a sewer smell rides along, the seal at the drain end has perished as well.
Between cistern and pan
the rubber joining the two, which lets go quietly and stains the porcelain before it dampens the floor.
Under the cistern
the mini stop (a small shut-off tap on the supply) or the braided line feeding it, which drips at the supply end before anything else.
Base with the seals intact
a hairline crack in the porcelain, which we confirm before quoting anything.
A quiet cistern leak settles with one simple test. Add a few drops of food colouring to the cistern water and leave it without flushing. Colour appearing in the bowl means water escapes past the outlet valve, and one flush afterwards clears it, because the dye leaves no stain on a ceramic bowl.

Woolstore Bathrooms Hide Small Leaks
Teneriffe's toilets mostly sit inside woolstore conversions, where bathrooms were fitted into old brick halls and the pipework runs boxed through timber floors. A cistern leaking from a tired stop tap can drip into that structure, and through a neighbour's ceiling below, long before a stain shows upstairs. We treat every loo leak in these buildings as urgent for that reason, whether it is a Harcourt Street unit or a block along Beeston Street.

Toilet Repairs for Owners and Tenants
The QBCC lets anyone with the right knowledge and skill swap three cistern rubbers: a drop valve washer, a float valve washer plus the suction cup rubber. Queensland calls those three unregulated repairs, though the finished work still has to meet the standards.
Any other toilet repair is minor work in the QBCC's eyes. A licensee does the job, with no permit required and no Form 4 needed. Washers on the rest of your taps follow the same rules, which our tap repairs page sets out, with full tap replacement covered separately when a fitting is past saving.
Renters get one extra protection. Queensland's tenancy rules treat a loo that blocks or breaks as an emergency repair in a rental, so the tenant rings the emergency contact named on the agreement instead of waiting for a routine visit. Keeping the premises in good repair falls to the owner or manager, and the tenant tells them as soon as the fault shows up.

What Affects the Cost of a Toilet Repair
The price turns on three things: which part has failed, whether the porcelain itself has split, and how tight the access is to the cistern and its stop tap. The figure arrives as a fixed quote after we inspect the job, and nothing starts before you approve it.
Two marks before anything new goes in. A replacement suite or cistern needs WaterMark certification and WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) registration before a licensed plumber may legally install it.
A suite that keeps needing repairs can cost less over time to renew than to keep patching, and we judge that one job by job. Boxed woolstore bathrooms can add labour to either path, whichever way the call goes.

Toilet Repair Questions From Teneriffe
Call (07) 3524 0766Why does my toilet smell of sewage?
The rubber seals at the drain end of the pan have usually perished or shifted. A plumber checks the connector and its rubbers, renews whatever has worn, and the smell clears once the joint seals again.
Why won't my toilet flush properly?
Usually one of three faults: the cistern level sits too low, scale blocks the jet holes under the rim, or the flush button sticks partway. Fixing whichever one applies restores the full flush.
Should I repair or replace an old toilet?
Repair it while the porcelain is sound and a single valve or seal is wearing out. Once the porcelain cracks or the visits keep repeating, a replacement suite usually costs less over time than a string of call-outs.
Can a cracked cistern or pan be repaired in Teneriffe?
No, cracked porcelain is where repair stops and replacing starts, because no seal or valve cures a split in the vitreous china. We quote a replacement suite when we find a crack in the cistern or pan.
Does the water utility cover a leaking cistern?
No, a concealed leak adjustment from Urban Utilities leaves out water wasted by a leaking cistern, so the owner carries that loss on the bill. Fixing a running cistern early costs less than letting it leak.
